Useful Windows 10 File Explorer shortcuts

File Explorer includes a lot of keyboard shortcuts to help complete tasks a little quicker.

Here’s a list with the most useful shortcuts for File Explorer.

Windows key + E                                                            Open File Explorer.

Alt + D                                                                                 Select address bar.

Ctrl + E (or F)                                                                     Select search box.

Ctrl + N                                                                                Open new window.

Ctrl + W                                                                                Close active window.

Ctrl + F (or F3)                                                                   Start search.

Ctrl + mouse scroll wheel                                                 Change view file and folder.

Ctrl + Shift + E                                                                   Display all folders above the selected folder

Ctrl + Shift + N                                                                   Create new folder on desktop/File Explorer.

Ctrl + L                                                                                  Focus on the address bar.

Ctrl + Shift + Number (1-8)                                              Changes folder view.

Alt + P                                                                                    Display preview panel.

Alt + Enter                                                                            Open Properties for selected file

Alt + Right arrow key                                                              View next folder.

Alt + Left arrow key (or Backspace)                                     View previous folder.

Alt + Up arrow                                                                          Move up a level in folder path.

F11                                                                                               Switch active window full screen

F5                                                                                                 Refresh File Explorer.

F2                                                                                                 Rename selected item.

F4                                                                                                 Switch focus to address bar.

F5                                                                                                 Refresh File Explorer current view.

F6                                                                                                 Cycle through elements on screen

Home    *                                                                                     Jump to top of the window.

End        *                                                                                    Jump to bottom of the window.

About Sylvia the IT Lady Sylvia has been working in the IT industry for 25 years. Provided support for users at the Calgary Airport, Calgary City Hall, Nortel, Law firm in Calgary, Law firm in Toronto, Software start-up company and a Bottling company. She began her career after the kids went to school working for an Electrical Contracting firm in Calgary, started on the reception desk ending up as HR manager. Times were changing so she decided to change careers to IT. Received her MSCE from a small technical college in Calgary, and the rest is history. As well as my MSCE she has earned CompTIA Server+, iNet+, Network+ and ITIL.v3. certifications. When she is not supporting companies and user, she can be found in the kitchen canning pickles to enter into local agricultural fairs, (winning several ribbons) preparing pies and quiches for the freezer, hiking in the summer, snowshoeing in the winter and making wine. Learning to play the piano as well.
